Know Your Rights

The boss just called me into the office. What do I do?

You have a right to a Union Representative if you are disciplined. It's called the Weingarten Rule. Ask for a union representative if you are asked to meet with management and there is a possibility discipline could occur. You do not need to speak until your representative has arrived. You have the right to remain silent.

Having a representative with you helps protect you by having a third party witness the actions being taken. It also will give you support and guidance if the action taken has violated policy, or you have been disciplined without "just cause". You have this right to representation even if you are not a member of AaNA. Your union grievance officers are Joe Peacott - 830-2725 and Kathleen Gettys - 223-5333.

Being in a union gives you this right.

AaNA believes that professional nurses must be able to practice under terms and conditions which enable them to deliver the best possible patient care, as well as terms which provide them with the best possible rewards for delivering it.
