Increase of Syphilis in Alaska: How do we fight this outbreak?

Amy Doogan, BSN, RN

Twenty years ago, researchers thought that they were close to eradicating syphilis in the United States. Unfortunately, there has since been a significant resurgence in the number of syphilis cases reported nationwide, with numbers increasing steadily from 2001 to now. In Alaska, the number of syphilis cases reported has quadrupled from last year to this year. In this presentation, nurses will learn more about current syphilis trends in Alaska and facts about syphilis transmission, prevention, staging, and treatment. The reasons for the increase in syphilis cases and the role that nurses can play in the prevention, detection, and treatment of syphilis across Alaska will be discussed.
