THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION (MDA) in Alaska is actively recruiting Volunteer Nurses (RN or LPN), to serve as medical staff

for our 2013 MDA Summer Camp held at Birchwood Camp in Chugiak, Alaska, July 28-August 2^nd.

The Alaska MDA is also recruiting volunteers to serve as camp counselors!

MDA Summer Camp is a magical place where children with neuromuscular disease can participate in a wide range of activities specially designed for young people who have limited mobility or use wheelchairs. Our campers range in age from 6-17 years, and each camper is matched with a volunteer counselor who will receive training from MDA staff prior to camp to prepare them for their important role as a volunteer counselor- one who provides the care, close supervision, and attention that a child with a neuromuscular disease needs. Volunteer medical staff (RN and LPN) are needed on site as well, and must be prepared to stay at camp the entire week, attending to the medical needs of our campers. We will have a physician on-call for more serious emergencies. Our volunteer staff will sleep in comfortable cabins in a scenic area, surrounded by people dedicated to making MDA Summer Camp a safe and memorable week for children with neuromuscular diseases.

Nursing Economic$ Foundation Scholarships
Available to Graduate Students in a Nursing Program

Up to four $5,000 scholarships will be awarded to registered nurses in a Masters or Doctoral nursing program with an emphasis on administration or management for the upcoming school year. Requirements for candidates are listed below.

The Trustees of the Nursing Economic$ Foundation are pleased to support graduate level nursing education by awarding this scholarship.

The Candidate:

1. must be matriculated or matriculating into an accredited, degree-granting, Masters or Doctoral nursing program with an emphasis on administration or management for the 2013-2014 school year at a School of Nursing in the United States.
2. must plan to continue in the field of nursing with a career interest in nursing administration, management, leadership, or education upon completion of degree program.
3. must be a Registered Nurse (RN) and a United States citizen.
4. must complete the Nursing Economic$ Foundation Scholarship award application and submit to the Foundation office prior to the deadline of June 15, 2013.
5. may not have previously been awarded a Nursing Economic$ Foundation Scholarship while enrolled in the same degree program for which this application is being made.
6. understands that this scholarship is not exclusive. It may be received by the student in addition to any other scholarships or grants that have been awarded.
7. grants the Nursing Economic$ Foundation and the Nursing Economic$ journal the right to publish a picture and biography or other application-related information if awarded a Foundation scholarship.
8. agrees that any scholarship awards will be used to defer the cost of tuition and other school-related fees (excluding: room, board, social, health insurance or athletic fees) in the degree-granting program and further understands that the Nursing Economic$ Foundation will pay the awarded scholarship jointly to the individual and the indicated school.
9. cannot be a member of the Nursing Economic$ Foundation Board of Trustees; a member of the Nursing Economic$ Editorial Board; an employee of theNursing Economic$ Foundation; an employee of Anthony J. Jannetti, Inc.; or a family member of any of the above.

The official publication of the Alaska Nurses Association is The Alaska Nurse. This year we are switching from an out-of-state publisher to an Alaskan publisher: A.T. Publishing & Printing, Inc. We are also changing our format from newsprint to a color glossy magazine format and from a 4 times a year publication to a 6 times a year publication. We are very excited about this change because it allows us to work with a publisher familiar with Alaska, and allows us to produce a more timely publication.

As the matriarch of the modern therapeutic humor movement, Ms. Wooten is a founding member of the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor, a member of the professional advisory board for the World Laughter Tour, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her work in the field of therapeutic humor.
